| Ajanta Group makes quartz clocks and home appliances in India. The company is also into the business of manufacturing vitrified tiles, electric bikes and CFL lamps. It is a 1400 crore group that is now in process of acquiring a Chinese electric car maker that can produce at least 5000 electric car models per year.Ajanta is planning to introduce a new Rs one-lakh car in the Indian market sourced from an electric car manufacturer in Guangzhou, China.
Ajanta has not disclosed the details of the ongoing deal so far but the deal will be finalized before the end of this year. The company intends to bring its own brand of 'Oreva' cars for city ride and urban commutation. It already has its own electric bikes manufacturing unit in Kutch region of Gujarat where it produces 10,000 electric bikes every year.
“We have not yet decided on it, but are seeking the government support, so that we can develop cheaper vehicles for the Indian market.” VAT and excise duty put together make almost a fourth of the total manufacturing costs of the vehicle. “If the costs are lowered, we are capable of manufacturing battery-powered cars at Rs 1 lakh or less,” he said. |

| Bajaj-Made in India |
 |
| Bajaj-Renault -Nissan have decided to bury the hatchet and are planning to make a fresh announcement soon about manufacturing of its ultra low-cost car. The project was getting delayed so far due to difference of opinion between Renault and Bajaj Auto related to branding of the car and its basic concept. While Renault wanted the car to be based on price, Bajaj Auto intended to brand the car as “more value for money.&rdquo
Both Renault and Nissan have existing partnerships in India. Nissan has a joint venture with Ashok Leyland to manufacture light trucks, while Renault has joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra to manufacture passenger car model Logan. Renault has already announced that it intends to end up with only one partner in India which will be know in time to come.
Bajaj Auto’s Rajiv Bajaj had earlier announced this year that it intends to scrap the existing project and begin afresh as he does not agree with the existing views about branding of the car and its concept. The design team has come up with a new concept which has received approval from Renault chief as well. |
